Collection: Anne & Jean-Francois Ganevat
Jean Francois and his sister Anne Ganevat are renowned for producing exceptional wines that stand out for their unique qualities. The picturesque Jura region has a stunning green landscape nestled between Burgundy and Switzerland. Vineyards are strategically planted on slopes of varying altitudes and gradients in this cool climate. With forty different grape varieties, the styles of wines produced here can surprise newcomers. At the heart of this region lies the charming hamlet of La Combe de Rotalier, just south of Lons-le-Saunier, where Jean-François Ganevat, affectionately known as Fanfan, crafts wines with the skill and creativity of an alchemist. His winemaking operation fills the quaint country cottages of the hamlet with barrels of his diverse yet traditional creations.
Their vineyards are meticulously tended by hand using biodynamic practices, and their winemaking process involves minimal intervention and extended ageing.
In 1998, Jean Francois and Anne embarked on their winemaking journey in Jura, becoming the 14th generation to oversee the Domaine. They hail from a prestigious lineage of winegrowers, tracing back to 1650. While the family initially diversified their agricultural pursuits with a dairy operation supplying milk for the renowned Comté cheese until 1976, Jean-François gained valuable experience working alongside his father and at the esteemed Domaine Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet. In 1998, he returned to the Jura region to assume leadership of the family domain, joined by his sister, Anne.
Despite managing just eight and a half hectares of vineyards, the family cultivates seventeen distinct local grape varieties, including red and white varietals—a remarkable diversity for their modest acreage. Driven by an unwavering commitment to excellence and profound attention to detail, Jean-François pursued biodynamic certification for the domain, reflecting his deep-rooted passion for sustainable viticulture practices.
Jean-François Ganevat is a masterful winemaker who produces an impressive array of cuvées yearly, utilising estate-grown fruit and sourced grapes to craft between thirty-five and forty unique wines annually. His winemaking approach transcends the norm, with a meticulous focus on individualised élévage for each cuvée, a process that may seem daunting to some. Drawing inspiration from Burgundian techniques, Jean-François employs ouillage to carefully maintain his barrels. Renowned for his skill and artistry, he is truly a magician of the wine world, transforming grapes into liquid gold. The ethereal quality of his wines sets him apart as a visionary in the industry.
