Controvento's winery is located in Rocca San Giovanni, in Abruzzo, it is run by Vincenzo Di Meo. Abruzzo is a mountainous region in central Italy with a significant coastline on the Adriatic sea and an important producer of wine, Abruzzo is particularly known for two varieties, the red Montepulciano and the white Trebbiano. Vincenzo's father bought some land in Rocca San Giovanni at the end of the 1970s and planted some vines. The vineyards, farmed organically, are now a total of 5 hectares. The vines are around 25 years old, a newer section was planted around 6 years ago. Grape varietals are mostly Montepulciano d ’Abruzzo and Trebbiano, but Vincenzo grows, in smaller quantities, Fiano, Passerina, Malvasia, Mantonico and Cabernet. He follows a non-interventionist approach in the cellar; fermentations are spontaneous with indigenous yeast, no sulfites are used at any stage of production. All of Controvento's wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Enzo’s wines are a genuine expression of the terroir they come from, fresh and salty, easy but never banal.
