HOW HE GOT HERE

Fabio Gea started his professional life far from the vineyards, working as a geologist, studying soils, rocks, and landscapes. But the pull of his family land in Neive, Barbaresco was irresistible. In 2010, he returned to take over a few tiny vineyard plots once tended by his grandfather, embracing a hands-on, artisanal approach to winemaking.

With just 1.8 hectares of vines, including old Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and small plantings of Grignolino, Fabio decided to abandon conventional Barbaresco norms. He experiments boldly with amphorae, porcelain, and glass vessels, often fermenting without additives or sulfur, creating wines that are simultaneously untamed and precise.

This radical yet thoughtful approach has made him one of the most daring small-scale winemakers in the Langhe, attracting attention from natural wine enthusiasts worldwide. Fabio’s journey is a mix of scientific curiosity, respect for the land, and a refusal to follow rules, resulting in wines that feel alive, playful, and unmistakably his.

Where The Wine Is Born

The Langhe hills of Barbaresco, just northeast of Alba, are Fabio Gea’s canvas. Here, limestone, clay, and sandstone soils shape the vines, giving the wines tension, elegance, and mineral energy.

Fabio’s vineyards are scattered around Bricco di Neive, a small cru known for Nebbiolo, but also home to Dolcetto, Barbera, and old Grignolino. Many of his vines are 25–90 years old, planted in tiny parcels that his grandfather once cared for. These micro-plots, combined with careful hand-work and organic practices, allow each vineyard site to express its own personality in the wine.

In the cellar, Fabio’s experiments with amphorae, porcelain, and glass fermentations let each parcel speak. Minimal intervention ensures that the character of the land and the vine comes through fully, making every bottle a reflection of Barbaresco’s slopes, soils, and microclimate.

FOR THE NERDS

Fabio Gea’s winery is located in Bricco di Neive, a small cru in the heart of Barbaresco, northeast of Alba. The vineyards grow on a patchwork of limy, chalky marls mixed with clay and sandstone, creating soils that offer both tension and elegance to the Nebbiolo grapes. Fabio, originally trained as a geologist, spent years working for various corporations before returning to his ancestral land. He inherited the property from his maternal grandfather, Nòtu, and carefully restored the overgrown vineyards, breathing new life into plots that had been neglected for decades.

Today, Fabio manages just under 1 hectare of his own vines, plus an additional rented plot, working entirely by hand. He cultivates a mixture of Nebbiolo, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Grignolino, often interplanted in small, biodiverse parcels that allow each micro-site to express its own character. Vine training, canopy management, and harvest are all meticulous, reflecting his geologist’s eye for detail and respect for the land.

In the cellar, Fabio continues his experimental, hands-on philosophy. Fermentations take place in a mix of amphorae, porcelain, and glass vessels, with minimal or no sulfur, native yeasts, and little intervention. Some cuvées lean toward classical Barbaresco structure, while others push boundaries, exploring radical expressions of Nebbiolo and the Langhe terroir. Each bottle is deeply personal — a reflection of the land, the vintage, and Fabio himself.

Despite the small scale of production, his wines are remarkably diverse: some show the elegance, aromatic lift, and fine tannins expected of the Langhe, while others are provocative, idiosyncratic, and utterly original, challenging expectations of what Nebbiolo can be. Fabio’s work is as much about observation, patience, and curiosity as it is about traditional winemaking: he treats the vineyard as a living system, letting each plot dictate its own rhythms, and translating that into wines that are precise, vibrant, and unmistakably alive.
