Collection: R. Lopez de Heredia
The renowned winery "Lopez de Heredia" was established in 1877 in Haro. At the turn of the century, the company was recognized as a pioneer in French cellar technology. Presently, the company is under the stewardship of María José López de Heredia, representing the fourth generation of leadership.
The vineyards span across 170 hectares, cultivating a variety of Rioja grapes including Tempranillo, Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo, Graciano, Viura, and Malvasía. The winemaking process remains steadfastly traditional, with spontaneous fermentation in large wooden vats, fining with egg whites, and a deliberate avoidance of filtration (no steel tanks are used). The winery boasts an impressive collection of 15,000 American oak barrique barrels, crafted in-house at their own cooperage and utilized for decades.
What sets this winery apart? It's their unwavering commitment to extensive wood and bottle aging. Crianzas undergo three years of barrel aging, Reservas are aged 5-6 years, and Gran Reservas mature for a minimum of nine years before bottling. The Blanco Gran Reserva even spends a decade in barrique.
Winemaker Maria José López de Heredia emphasizes, "Our winemaking legacy has been passed down through generations. Our daily practices are deeply rooted in tradition, yet we firmly believe in the relevance and modernity of our techniques."
