HOW THEY GOT HERE

Valdisole began in 2015 on the hills of Roero, in a little village called Corneliano d’Alba, born from the unexpected curiosity and passion of founders Giuseppe Amato and Kyriaki Kalimeri — neither of whom came from a winemaking family.

Their first vineyard was literally purchased online — half a hectare of abandoned Nebbiolo that became the starting point of the project. From this unusual beginning, Valdisole grew into a small, evolving estate driven by respect for old vines and biodiversity.

In recent years, they’ve expanded their holdings to include new plantings and rare, endangered Piedmont varieties such as Malvasia Moscata, Bragat Rosa, Cari, and Moscato Nero d’Acqui, balancing tradition and experimentation with a deep connection to the land.
Valdisole’s journey isn’t linear — it’s a story of curiosity and creative play, guided by a desire to make wines that express something unexpected about Roero’s soils and grapes.

Where The Wine Is Born

Valdisole’s vineyards are planted mainly within the Roero DOCG and especially in the Valdistefano geographic zone — a terroir of sandy, clay and fossil-rich limestone soils that give the wines their distinctive tension, clarity, and freshness.

The vineyards sit around 380 m above sea level, where sandy soils — rich in fossil content from ancient seas — combine with Piedmont’s cool nights and warm days, preserving acidity and aromatic precision in the grapes.

This terroir, coupled with hands-off vineyard practices, produces fruit with pure expression and allows Valdisole’s wines to be both textural and evocative, whether in orange-skin whites or bright, red Nebbiolo expressions.

FOR THE NERDS

Valdisole is a young, experimental winery founded in 2015 in Corneliano d’Alba — part of the UNESCO World Heritage zone that includes Langhe, Roero and Monferrato.

Founders Giuseppe Amato and Kyriaki Kalimeri started with half a hectare of abandoned Nebbiolo vines purchased online, driven by curiosity and passion rather than tradition. Their vineyards — now about 4 hectares — include old and new plantings across the Roero DOCG and especially the Valdistefano zone, known for its sandy, fossil-rich soils.

Valdisole follows strict natural practices in the vineyard: no synthetic chemicals, use of propolis and seaweed treatments, and mineral sulfur only when necessary. In the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, with no enological forcing and very low or no sulphites.

Their wines range from orange and skin-contact whites (like Armonia, Aura, Oneiro) to fresh reds and rosés (Amos, Pnoi) and experimental blends (Panta Rhei), each showcasing texture, purity and a global perspective of techniques applied to local terroir.
Valdisole’s philosophy — rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and respect for the grape — results in wines that are distinctive, lively, and richly expressive of Roero’s sandy terroir.

“Motivated by passion and great curiosity, we continually experiment with new and old practices.”
