It's the most understandable thing in the world. You've got one bottle to open tonight, you've got a fixed amount to spend, and you know that Burgundy works. So you buy the Burgundy.

We do the same thing. Everyone does.

The result is that the bottles which sit longest on our shelves are almost never the worst ones. They're the ones from places without a reputation to lean on. Corsica. The Jura. Savoie. The Languedoc. Bordeaux that isn't playing the Bordeaux game. These regions have to earn every single customer, one bottle at a time, against names that arrive pre-approved.

So here's the deal. Buy five bottles from the first list. Then add a sixth from the second one — on us.

This is the part we actually care about.

Every bottle in this second list is here for the same reason as everything else we stock — we tasted it, we liked it, we brought it in. Corsica doesn't have Burgundy's reputation and the Languedoc doesn't have the Rhône's. That has almost nothing to do with what's in the glass and almost everything to do with three hundred years of marketing and a handful of monks with good record-keeping.

Duseigneur farms Châteauneuf-du-Pape with more restraint than most of the appellation. Mariotti Bindi works Corsican varieties that grow properly nowhere else. Millaire makes Bordeaux that has nothing to do with the Bordeaux you're picturing. Eric Thill and Domaine des Ronces are in the Jura, doing things that would be illegal in most appellations and better for it.
