HOW THEY GOT HERE

Domaine des Ronces was founded in 1950 by Georges Mazier in Orbagna, a small village in the southern Jura (Sud Revermont) — an under‑the‑radar part of the Jura vineyard landscape.

Originally planted with only Chardonnay, the estate grew under Georges’s son, Michel Mazier, who expanded plantings to include classic Jura reds like Trousseau, Poulsard, and later Pinot Noir as the holdings grew to roughly 6–7 hectares.

In 2010, the domaine began its journey into organic agriculture, becoming fully certified by 2013, then moving toward biodynamic practices in 2014, and achieving Demeter certification in 2016 with the arrival of third‑generation winemaker Kevin Mazier.

Kevin’s stewardship honors the legacy while bringing precision, terroir‑focus, and natural winemaking into every cuvée — from crisp whites to oxidative Savagnin, Vin Jaune, reds, and traditional Crémant du Jura.

Where The Wine Is Born

The wines are born in Orbagna, within the Côtes du Jura appellation, in the southwestern slopes of the Jura vineyards — a region where clay‑limestone and marl terroirs give structure and minerality to grapes.

There are three key terroirs at the domaine:

- Clay‑limestone soils with east/west exposure for white varieties
- Marl‑based soils with north/south exposure also for whites
- Clay‑limestone with north/south exposure ideal for reds

This mix of soil types and exposures allows Domaine des Ronces to craft a diverse range of wines — each with clear identity and expression of Jura’s often overlooked southern terroir.

FOR THE NERDS

Domaine des Ronces is a three‑generation family estate in the Sud Revermont of the Jura — an area that doesn’t get the same spotlight as Arbois but produces wines rich in character and authenticity.
Founded by Georges Mazier in 1950 with just 1 hectare of Chardonnay, the estate expanded under his son Michel to about 6 hectares, adding key Jura varieties like Savagnin, Trousseau, Poulsard, and Pinot Noir.

The domain converted to organic viticulture in 2010, achieving full certification by 2013, and embraced biodynamic practices by 2014, culminating in Demeter certification in 2016 with the arrival of Kevin Mazier, who brought an expanded philosophical and technical rigour to the wines.

Vineyard work is a blend of manual care (e.g., disbudding, trimming) and careful soil management in marl and clay‑limestone parcels. Hand harvests allow for gentle grape handling, and fermentations rely on native yeasts with minimal sulfur additions and no filtration for most cuvées.

The domaine’s portfolio spans traditional Jura benchmarks like Vin Jaune and Savagnin (extended oxidative aging) to topped‑up whites (ouillé style), artisan reds, Crémant du Jura pétillants, and even Macvin (fortified) — each showing clear soil imprint, vintage identity, and artisanal intent.
