HOW THEY GOT HERE

Château de la Selve was founded in 2002 by Benoît Chazallon, newly graduated from wine school in Beaune, with a conviction that the Ardèche’s terroir held immense potential — blazing sunshine, cool nights, and argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) soils scented with garrigue, humus, and truffles.

Together with his wife Florence, Benoît set about creating a domaine rooted in organic and biodynamic viticulture, aimed at nurturing soil life and allowing the land to express itself through living wines. Their approach is minimal intervention in the cellar: they accompany vinification naturally, letting spontaneous processes shape wines with vibrance, finesse, and depth.

Over two decades, the estate has grown into a 44-hectare biodynamic property producing expressive reds, whites, and rosés presented in three thoughtful ranges — Domaine, Les Terroirs, and Les Confidentielles — each reflecting distinct vineyard parcels and stylistic focus.

Where The Wine Is Born

Château de la Selve’s vineyards lie along the banks of the Chassezac River in southern Ardèche, where clay-limestone soils intermingle with pebbles, sand, and limestone fragments that vines must push through to find deep moisture and minerals.

The climate here is Méditerranéen with garrigue influence — hot days, cool nights, and strong diurnal swings that preserve acidity while ripening fruit fully. This terroir yields fruit with textural tension, vibrant energy, and a sense of place in every cuvée.

Vine work is geared toward soil health and natural defenses, while vinification embraces spontaneity and respect for raw material. The result: wines that are authentic, structured, and expressive of both the Ardèche landscape and the season in which they were grown.

FOR THE NERDS

Château de la Selve’s journey began with Benoît and Florence Chazallon’s belief in the Ardèche’s terroir potential — blazing Mediterranean sunshine balanced by cool nights, and ancient clay-limestone soils that demand strong, deep roots.

Today the estate covers about 44 hectares, worked biodynamically and organically, with a team that includes long-term staff and seasonal helpers who support meticulous vineyard care. Their priority is soil vitality and vine health, achieved through biodynamic preparations and minimal external inputs, so that each parcel’s character shines through.
In the cellar, Château de la Selve follows a light-touch philosophy: alcoholic and malolactic fermentations are natural, oenological inputs are kept to a minimum, and vinifications are guided rather than forced. Their wines span fresh and fruit-driven whites and rosés to structured, expressive reds — all united by purity of fruit, mineral remembrance of the soil, and energetic finish.

The domaine’s three ranges — Les Cuvées Domaine, Les Terroirs, and Les Confidentielles — each tell a slightly different story of place and technique, giving wine lovers a broad yet coherent palette of Ardèche expression.

“In the cellar we accompany the wine naturally, to create living wines that reflect the wonderful Ardèche terroir.”
